Nguyen’s artwork is still something special but this story is lacking the emotional depth and world building of the Descender series. I'm still highly enjoying this series though.

The story is starting to get rolling in this volume and it was a good read. As always, the watercolor art is on point.

As with the first volume, the artwork is incredible. Filled with vibrant watercolours and bold lines, this series really stands out and is thoroughly expressive in its characters. This volume did not accomplish a whole lot more, but it was an important transition.

We find out more about "Mother", Andy gets some closure (albeit a bit too convenient of a coincidence…). The Helda and Telsa relationship is a nice touch. And I'm eager to see more of Mr. Vamp hunter Kanto.

I absolutely love the Descender series, and I really liked Volume 1 of Ascender too. It was bound to happen that I'd eventually come across a volume that wasn't as awesome as the rest, and this is it. The genre has taken a steep dive toward fantasy from scifi, which I'm not a huge fan of. This one also tried really hard to pluck at my heart strings, but it wasn't nearly as effective as it previously has been.

I still love the artwork and the world as well as the characters, though.
