On this re-read, I'm really enjoying getting to spend more time with my favs and I'm loving the introduction of magic to the world :)
Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen continue to dazzle as the Ascender saga matches its predecessor, Descender in all things - story, art, character, setting. Visually breathtaking and narratively compelling, we are drawn ever deeper into a cycle between magic and automation in which worlds rise and fall but the human spirit prevails.
You really have to respect a saga that makes you feel sympathy for a villain. Especially one where the kind of magic that is in opposition to her comes from her abusive past. All by a threat even worse than her; so entitled that this threat is willing to betray her former allies, the ones the threatening villain pledged loyalty towards and try to live up to. One that could unveil the secrets of magic that the technology from the last series kept hidden.
But then you remember the rest of the cast. And how this formerly holy mother practically destroyed the main family to get the love and admiration she could never have. All while the returning cast are trying to keep what little of their broken lives they have left. The reunions are genuinely something special.

A marked improvement over the last volume in a lot of ways. For one, Telsa finally growing as a person is great, it took like, 7 volumes, but she's finally like, not completely uptight. Cool. Mila feels a bit better in this volume than the first, since its less action focused, and Andy isn't around stealing all her spotlight. I do wish she got to actually *do* anything since I know this one is very short, so with each passing issue it feels more and more like she won't have any real part to play. That said, her character has some fun moments and fun implications, so thats a worry for later. Plus, we do an interesting this with the villains. I find the backstory of the woman who has been the mother up until this point pretty good, and there's some more on that front that, even if they are still generically evil tyrants, adds a bit of flavor to the package.
But its me and theres one character I can't not complain about throughout all of this. Yup, its time for the Queen Between, we're in the Effie hour. After being horribly mistreated for the entirety of Descender, and seemingly killed off, she's back! As a mindless vampire who has lost everything good about her outside of the character design. Yup, great, cool. Oh wait! She's herself again! Oh nope nevermind, she had Andy kill her. D-does lemire just hate this character? I really don't get it.
