Yet more of my fave characters from the Descender series returning, actually squealed in delight at the last page reveal. Getting background about the time between the Descender and Ascender series in this second volume, grateful for the filling in of gaps! Heavier on fantasy than sci fi in this sequel series, but still great art style, action and developing plot.

There's a lot of background in this volume which is interesting, but I do feel the whole Mother switch was a little rushed since the information is introduced then immediately used with no real buildup. I appreciate they gave Effie a proper ending, I was sad to see her written out how she was so appreciated the closure. Great cliffhanger, excited to get to the next volume.
I really tried to like Descender, and I really tried to like this but I can't. The pacing is awkward and jumpy. In spite of heartfelt moments, I just can't seem to get attached to any of the characters.

So much happen this volume and overall I enjoyed it.
My main problems have to do with the pacing of the story. I think a lot is happening and is being established and as a reader it feels quick. There are a lot of years in between, so you can't include more without deviating from the main storyline. So, I understand the decisions, but it suffers a bit from it.
She ripped into a whale to save her. That's a little cheesy but alright. I like that theres a sapphic relationship here. Although I do feel like more could've been done in the flashback to solidify their romance.
I have a "evil queen" vibe from Mother. "Magic Mirror tell me what my demise will be." Answer: "The fairest hound in all the land" I feel like while seeking out the hound means she is walking into destiny.

I'm still getting used to the sci-fi to fantasy pivot (tech to magic), and while I'm liking the new depth to the familiar characters, the continuing introduction to newer characters is leaving me wanting more.
i love the stuff with the established characters and mila but found myself getting lost and confused in the mother backstory. regardless, this volume feels like a lot of set-up so i’m excited to see where the story goes.

Descender was Tim and Andy trying to reunite, and I guess the pay off for Ascender will be Mila and Andy's reunion. Bless Lemire and Nguyen for inventing this story and taking me on this crazy ride.
