I really enjoyed Kill the Queen. I thought the idea of combining surviving royal intricacies with gladiator fighting and magic was really interesting. I thought the world-building was really detailed and kept me interested. Evie started out a little plain for me initially, but I felt like she grew in the story. Overall it kept me interested.

Wow. This was a really fun new fantasy that I just could not put down.

The pacing was break-neck. And by that I mean that the plot of this book could easily spread across two books in the series. I am shocked at how much we got through, because I didn't expect what happened in the end of this book to happen until a bit further down the road.

That's not really a criticism - the pacing is part of what made it so riveting. But I think there were places where we whipped through a little too fast, and could have spent some more time becoming invested with our cast. Don't get me wrong, I like them very much. But I feel like ... I don't really know Serilda, Cho, or Sully. I barely know Evie.

That said, I'm thrilled for the next book in the series. I've already pre-ordered it.

Re-read July 2019
Wanted a refresher before I jumped into the sequel. I loved it as much as I did the first time around. And I'm very much looking forward to getting to know the rest of the characters, especially Serilda - I like her, but cautiously, because I'm not sure that I trust her. I will never forget that when it came time for Serilda to choose whether to do the easy thing or the right thing -
SpoilerI'm talking about when Emilie tried to kill Paloma
- Serilda chose to do the easy thing, even though it meant she was likely throwing Evie's life away. That one fucking terrible action over the troop she "ruled" makes me distrust her, and puts a big dent in my respect for her. So I'm excited to see where her arc goes from here.
