TL;DR: A young woman describes her life after everything we understand about our world falls apart. It’s dystopian within reach of the United States today.

The Handmaid's Tale is an equally terrifying and exceptional story. It was a choice book in AP Literature and one of my students got the graphic novel on their own and shared it with me to read. I have loved listening in on my students' conversations and them grappling with the big ideas Margaret Atwood presents. The graphic novel is well done and there are some really interesting things the artist does to share Atwood's story in a powerful way. From a teaching standpoint, I would pair it with the original text. This revisit makes me want to read The Testaments again.

I thought this graphic novel an excellent adaptation of Atwood's novel.

This is a graphic novel formatting of the original novel that 1st came out in the 1980's. It's still frighteningly plausible, maybe even more so every time I look at it. I am copying and pasting my review from the original book here.
I read this book in a little over 12 hours, which is some sort of new record for me,and even though the author states that she came up with the idea back in 1981, the story line hits a little too close to home. The best example of this is the protagonist's description of using paper money as antiquated, because everyone now uses plastic cards. Similarly, the protagonist also describes an attack on the government by Islamic fanatics and you have a 1980's book that is suddenly disturbingly plausible. If you haven't already read this, give it a shot.

Aanrader.
