a beautiful memoir of strong women, and an eloquent, perceptive, and illustrative story of the role language, in all its forms, has in shaping us

Hudes is a beautiful poetic writer and I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. Can't put my finger on it but I just didn't feel connected to it. My mind kept wandering. So I'll just blame myself and say that I am flawed because I'm sure this book is great.

Powerful truths expressed with such strong narrative energy that a memoir feels like a novel.

The connections across different diaspora always gets me, we are all so similar even with our uniqueness.
There was also this bit about her friends mentioning her mothers accent and her being like i dont hear it and it really brought me back to my childhood with my father.
