Interesting concept but poorly executed. With no character development, this story falls flat.

Meh. This is a novel about a girl who becomes a taster for Hitler through the last 2 years of WWII. I liked the idea of seeing the war from the German side, but the execution was awkward and weird.

None of the characters were fully formed and there was no growth through the course of the novel. I’m addition, I feel like the author had a list of events and places related to WWII and was determined to fit all of them in regardless of how unlikely or nonsensical it was.

And oh my god, the sex scenes were downright cringy. Trust and believe a woman is not thinking about her hymen during sex.

Nesužavėjo. Tema pasirinkta labai įdomi, bet pats pateikimas neatitiko mano lūkesčių. Pagrindinė veikėja daugiau mane nervino, nei kėlė simpatijas. Vietomis ištęsta su nereikšmingomis detalėmis, vietomis nuskubėta, kur buvo galima sužadinti skaitytojui kažkokią emociją. Įdomu kodėl autorius pasirinko iškreipti tikrus įvikius, kai tikroji istorija būtų buvusi gal net įdomesnė.

I haven’t read historical fiction in too long and this was a fantastic book to get me back in the genre. If you love learning about WWII and adore historical fiction I highly recommend this book! I loved Magda’s story so much. This story was complicated and heartfelt and will strike a nerve with any history buff.

More like 2.5 stars ..... but I am trying to give it the benefit of doubt since at the moment I am a little jaded by Nazi novels. My problems with the tale, which is certainly interesting and a "novel" idea for historical fiction, is the sensationalised story of the "Taster" killing Hitler and being such close confidant of Eva. Too over the top. Hitler did have tasters and was worried about being poisoned, but really? Also, the constant repeat of Magda's survival for Karl and the totally unbelievable ending. Extra: would it really be wise to keep a cabinet full of poisons in the kitchen so as to test your tasters .... probably better to not have ready access to poison around Hitler, ya think?!!
