"The moment one introduces a lover to one's family is inevitably uncomfortable. Who we choose reveals more about ourselves than we can know, about what we want and what we need, and the gap between self-revelation and self-knowledge is a chasm of vulnerability"
This book was a lot. One part biography, one part social commentary, this book shines a light on the erasure of Eileen O'Shaughnessy's contribution and influence on the literary work of her husband George Orwell, and her conspicuous absence in his autobiographical work and biographies.
The saying "behind every great man, is a great woman" is clearly articulated in this book, however the addendum might be noted as "but she is too often invisible, and goes without recognition". This book explores power in work and personal relationships, feminist perspectives in a patriarchal culture and draws parallels with modern systems that still report an imbalance in salary and career opportunities, as well as unpaid labor in marriage and family systems.
What I loved about this book was the blend of research, illustrative narrative, and personal reflection of which is woven together to create a beautifully insightful, yet devastating account, of a highly intelligent loyal and selfless woman, brought back from invisibility to shine in brilliance.

This is a hard book for me to review. I don't think it was the right book for me as I have no major interest in the subjects of the book.
However, I thought that the book was well researched, cleverly formatted and overall served it's purpose well.
