Beach read 2023

Man I sure do enjoy Ide’s narration style. And happy to see there’s plenty more of these books to get through.

Full of similes and heavy handed explanations. Definitely not as good as the first one. I do not think I will continue the series

Book #2 isn't quite as good as Book #1. Just missing some of the humor from poking fun at hip-hop and music industry culture, I suppose. But Ide still impresses with his ability to create a wide range of characters, especially fully realized "villains."

A big *OOF*. In an attempt to add depth, Joe Ide's Righteous, the second book in the IQ series falls short. The main plotline gets tangled up in a combination of clumsy writing and unusual pacing. The end product is something that feels like a poorly written, but a slightly enjoyable episode in Izaya Quintabe's life. I cannot seem to find the brilliant and eclectic IQ from the opening sequence of the first book here. There is little to no character development that does not feel forced and there isn't much payoff to any of the setup from earlier in the story. When I started finding myself wanting to skip to the end out of boredom, I realized it was over for me and this series. It was somewhat fun while it lasted.

I listened to this book and I think that was the issue.
The narrator was great, and I really like the characters.
However, I was so confused...I honestly don't know if the story was going back and forth in time.
Was it because I was listening? I kept having to hit rewind because I would say "wait, weren't we just in LA????".

Although I didn't like this story line as much as book #1, I look forward to the next book because I like all the characters and want to read the continuing story.

I loved the first book because it felt so fresh. This was disappointing because it just felt like a conglomerate of cliches.

This story bounces back and forth between two story lines. I found that a little confusing, honestly. Of course, the fact that I do a lot of reading in bed as I'm falling asleep might be part of my problem.

It's also pretty violent.

I appreciate Mr. Ide's characters and like them, but the violence (especially) kinda makes me less inclined to continue this series. (This is just me, I kinda hate violent groups like some of those portrayed here.)

I may continue the series at some point in the future maybe.

Not as good as his first book"IQ" but still pretty good.

Righteous is a very good follow up to last year's IQ. I love the characters that Ide has created and as long as he continues to create storylines around them, the more I am guaranteed to be a reader of Ide's books.
