What an epic journey I just read. I had received an email from Bookfunnel on behalf of the authors, Elayna R. Gallea and Daniela A. Mera, to read and possibly leave a review. I was so excited when I received this email.

A Court of Seas and Storms is A Little Mermaid retelling. This is the third standalone novel from the Legends of Love.

This story was nothing like I read before. A torturous slow-burn(but so worth it), hate-to-lovers romance, new found family, and a gripping story. The FMC is such a badass and rolls with the punches to keep fighting and surviving. The MMC is a hard ass but has a heart of gold. The suspense is what gripped me the most. I kept wondering if all the dangers that the main characters were experiencing were ever going to end. I couldn’t handle the emotional turmoil I was experiencing. At one point I was happy-go-lucky, things will be great then the next I wanted to jump in the book and knock some teeth out of some of these characters. I wished there was more to read. I felt as if it was cut off too short. I’m not sure if there will be a continuation of Helena and Erik. But I don’t want to spoil it for everyone. Thank you for letting me read this beautiful gem.

This was an interesting retelling of The Little Mermaid with a couple of unique differences. It was a nice casual read, but it was also quite short. It was a bit too short to contain enough world-building, especially since it can be read as a standalone (which is what I did).

I enjoyed the inclusion of fae and fae technology, which led to cute moments between the main characters. The female main character was assertive, and cheeky which was fun to read.

This book would have been more enjoyable if it was longer. The spice level was also lower than I expected. I would like to read a sequel to this, and I will probably still read the other books in the series, but I didn't love it.

I was provided an ARC of this title for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I will say this book was quite the cozy little read. Little mermaid retelling with enemies to lovers, strong female main character, and fast paced.
If you’re looking for spice (since that seems to be a common theme of what readers look for) there is basically none. It’s very face to black which isn’t bad at all. I know a lot of people prefer that.
This book has lots of action scenes and the slow burn of romance dancing along the storyline. This book apparently is the second book of a series but I read it as a stand alone and did not feel lost with anything going on. I will probably go back and read the first book to see how it fits into the story.

First and foremost thank you SO much to the authors for sending me this ARC. It was my first and I was very excited to read it. I loved Little Mermaid and looked forward to a twisted version of the tale. At first I was kind of intrigued but honestly a bit bored until 60% through the book. The new location if you will, gave it promise, but it just felt like a hot mess of a story line. It was entertaining enough. I loved certain aspects of the characters, I could resonate with the female main character in many ways. I felt there was so much tell instead of show and it made the romance feel less genuine. I didn’t enjoy the writing style and I really didn’t enjoy reading “female” as many times as it is out in the book. It was a lot

If you’re looking for a fun and unique enemies to lovers twist on The Little Mermaid, featuring a moody pirate and a sassy Mer who gives him a quite the run for his money, look no further!

This was such a fun take inspired by a widely beloved classic, and it didn’t disappoint. I loved the banter between Helena and Erik, which had no business being as humorous as it was, being that our sassy little thing of a FMC was mute for half the book. But it was; an engaging adventure that fantasy romance fans will want to embark on.

Readers who are returning from A Court of Fire and Frost will also be excited to know that there are some (minor) tidbits about Elva and Nathaniel sprinkled in a few places, too!

I am very much looking forward to reading more about Hades and Phaedra in A Court Of Wind and Wings!

I absolutely loved this book! I wouldn’t call it so much of a retelling of A Little Mermaid. When I hear that I assume there are going to be many similarities but there were not. Yes there’s a mermaid, yes she gets legs and can’t speak, but that’s about it. But don’t let that deter you! This book had just the right amount of enemies to lovers, love, wit, war, found family. So many things I look for in a book. And the fact that I don’t have to read an entire series to get to the ending was just the icing on the cake. Although I do wish there was more, the epilogue made it so I can imagine my own continuation of the story.

This story is a little mermaid retelling with Captain Hook included. Helena is a very stubborn mermaid who was forced on land without her voice and Erik is the grumpy pirate stuck with her. Their dynamic is really funny and enjoyable, there was a lot of laughing for me when reading this. The character development of these two was strong, and there are some other lovable characters in there too. The plot was pretty good and it wasn’t a cliche retelling like some are, it had a very original twist on it and I really enjoyed it. Who knew a pirate could have morals?

A Court of Seas and Storms is a fantasy romance that takes its inspiration from The Little Mermaid story, but spins it to something completely new. It tells the story of Helena (a mermaid princess) and Erik (a pirate captain), whose lives end up being entwined together. The story is set in world that is a mixture of modern (technology) and high fantasy, which got me intrigued.

I had some problems with the writing style. It seemed a bit clumsy and felt like it underestimated the reader by explaining self-evident things and processes. There were also some typos. The storyline was quite catchy so that got me reading on despite the writing style. I loved that the story hinted to the Iliad. I also liked how mutism was displayed in the book in a positive and hopeful light. Otherwise the book could have been better. It has a lot of potential. It seems that the book could have merited from a more thorough editing process to get the writing and the storyline more refined. It is still a good story to read for lovers of fantasy romance.

I received an advanced reader copy of the book and this is my honest opinion that is left voluntarily.

GENRE: fantasy romance
TROPE(S): enemies to lovers, little mermaid
POV: dual
THEMES: mermaids, pirates, demons
TRIGGERS: mutism, sexual abuse, murder

Thank you to the authors for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review!

The premise of this book sounded really promising. Pirates of the Caribbean meets a Little Mermaid retelling with a morally grey pirate captain? Yes, please! However, the book fell a bit flat for me. The book is part of a series, but stated to be able to be read as a standalone. I think reading the first book would've helped a lot with understand the world and the context of everything that was going on. So, I would suggest reading the books in order.

Some things that I liked:
-Erik and his morally grey-ness
-The banter between the characters
-Jean Luc
-The chimera
-Aidoneus

Some things that I didn't like:
-Lack of world building
-FMC
-Uncohesive mix of ancient and modern aspects
-Repetitive writing/plot/language
-Anticlimactic ending with lots of loose threads

Overall, the story has a lot of potential, but didn't deliver like it could have for me.
