Love Sophie Hannah, she sets up these scenarios that are so over the top,you can't fathom an explanation, then ties it all up neatly at the end. I love the unpredictable!

I love a mystery where the answer is always just around the next page. I like not knowing what is coming next. I can see how Hannah would be the pick to write a new Hercule Poirot mystery novel. She definitely would draw comparisons to Agatha!

There were some odd and totally irrelevant plot distractions in this story. The only thing that kept me reading it was that I had to know how it ended and really couldn't see it coming until quite near the end. Then it went into unending boring detail as to what happened. Kind of glad it's all over now. This is the third of her books I have read. It might be time to move on.

This book started out strong and then it just went on and on. It was a bit overwritten in my opinion and the relationship between Charlie and Simon could have been completely left out.

Gripping as ever with a twist I didn't see coming. I do wish she hadn't introduced the Charlie Zailer character though - I don't feel the soap opera of her inadequate life enhances the series in any way.

I started reading this trying to wind down on holiday, which wasn't ideal as it's full of the best and worst of human beings, in a painfully observant way. However, it's fantastically plotted and gripping to the end. My first Sophie Hannah! Lucky me!

It took a while to get drawn into the story and I found it difficult to like any of the characters involved.

I raced through this, and I thought the suspense was reasonable, but overall I thought it was too "clever". I liked the portrayal of a mind disintegrating under stress, but overall the motivation was a bit too far fetched for my belief. Very fast moving read though, very suitable for an afternoon in the sunshine!

What I Loved

  • The Other Woman's House is the second book I've read by Sophie Hannah and love her suspenseful writing style that held me spellbound until the very end

  • Her attention to detail is marvelous, not only does she create a more vivid picture in one's mind but adds depth to the crime at hand.

What I Didn't Love

  • Despite the detail Sophie Hannah creates the story drags and she spent too much time discussing the interior of "the other woman's house" so at times I actually forgot what the crime was.

  • Zailer and Waterhouse, the two detectives of the novel, just annoyed me.  Their honeymoon/relationship felt forced and they spent too much time talking it out rather than taking action.

Final Thoughts

The Other Woman's House was predictable to anyone who has watched Dateline as the husband always did it.  Sophie Hannah, while a good writer just didn't have the panache to keep me engaged in the novel and really didn't care about the motivate nor was I shocked by the turn in events.  Sadly, this outweighed the potential of the author and will be my last in the Spilling series.
