The Princess Beard is a satirical take on a lot of things: fantasy, fairy tales, pop culture, the patriarchy...you name it. It’s the third of a series of a books, (all more or less stand-alone) from Pell.

There were parts of this I LOVED and had me laughing out loud: a pirate named Queefqueg (dying in English Lit major), a whole section about Hogwarts, clever puns, and just ridiculous jokes. This was entertaining to read, BUT, and here’s the but, I felt the individual puns and jokes they wanted to make overpowered the story and plot. More than that, although I super agree with many of the points they made, it felt more like a lot of telling. The patriarchy is super bad, but it felt like at points I was just kinda being preached to about it (and hello, I’m the choir there).

So yes, fun, entertaining, but lacks a little in the plot and characterization department I felt. I’ve heard the first two are stronger stories so I may check those out.

This series is hilarious. Every chapter has something familiar, yet totally wrong. Chapter 14 had a Harry Potter reference that made me roll on the floor laughing. I even had to share it with my cubical mate. In one of the chapters they talk about Elf butts and otter balls for a long time. I don't know what is going on, but I love it!

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

I love this series! It is silly, irreverent fun! Great pop culture references and still a good strong story line. If you like audio, that’s the way to go. The reader is great and the voices are perfect!

This book was not for me. I was hoping I could find the humor in it since I love the Princess Bride. But it was just not my kind of humor. Honestly I'd say a 12 year old boy would probably find this more humorous than I did.

I will however be keeping the book because my brother got it for me for Christmas.

Just like the other two Tales of Pell, the Princess Beard is yet another hilarious adventure with found family and unlikely heroes. Over the past three books I have laughed and almost cried and been so happy to hear about the characters in the other books in subtle ways. I love this story with pirates and Morgan who wants to be a leader but not as a princess. Honestly I read the other two so I could read this one and it was so worth it because I discovered one of my favourite series ever.
