This short novel is full to bursting with magical realism and odd occurrences. There is the titular hole, a surprise neighbor, bugs, too many children, a bizarre mammal that no one notices, a forgotten old man... Perhaps the best way to categorize this novel is that finishing it is like waking up from a dream. Why did any of that happen and what did it mean? Did it even mean anything at all? The only continuous thread in this story seems to be the pressure of the capitalist myth of productivity. Readers are left to conclude that perhaps all the strangeness of Asa's new life is a sort of cosmic punishment for her joblessness.
