An interesting pop-science deep dive turned memoir into the history and cultural importance of three plants and their psychoactive chemicals, and the author's experience with them. I enjoyed how he structured the book, broke down the specifics of each chemical, and committed to describing a first person experience with each. There was a certain journalistic conviction to the book that I found satisfying.

Pollan's irreverent style is ever-present in this exploration of three plants that have shaped human history and human consciousness.

Pollan takes the reader on a journey through the historical and contemporary usages and laws regarding different psychoactive plants. Some of the laws regarding these plants are so asinine as to be funny...unless you happen to be on the wrong side of the aisle.
