I didn’t realize this was gonna be a book about this man journaling his experience with drugs.
Like cool you want to grow opium I guess? Cool you went to a mescaline ceremony? I thought I was gonna learn about the chemical interactions and actual impact on the brain and why these psychedelics do what they do.

Read for science book club at my school. I did enjoy it, but it was more autobiographical than I expected and didn’t get into the particular substances as much as I’d hoped. Some vague histories and mostly personal encounters. Still good, but it didn’t blow me away. I don’t feel like I came out of it with a significant amount of new knowledge like I’d hoped.

I expected this book to go more into the science of opium, caffeine, and mescaline, but it was more about the history and the authors personal journey with the plants. I would have enjoyed more science about these plants but it was still a very enjoyable book that detailed the history of these plants and the role they play in modern society. If you only wanted to read about one plant, the section on caffeine is amazing. I'm someone who only casually uses coffee on weekends as a treat, so it was very interesting learn more about it history, role in society, and the science of how it works.
