Sometimes anticipation can be a bad thing. I've been waiting for this book for over a year and what was delivered was just an average, bland dystopian. I have to say, I'm quite disappointed.

Reminiscent of a lot of YA dystopian books, but I liked it and will definitely read the sequels.

Wow, this book was insane! So many highs and lows! I'm still not sure how I felt about it though.
I mean, the story was great and original. I just felt like I was bounced around a lot. The beginning was great, then I felt like the whole story changed and then it changed again! I absolutely loved the main character, Gray though. You could really feel the emotions he was going through. I couldn't get into the love interests though.
Erin Bowman is quite talented. This story was so original. I wonder where she got the idea from. The world building was pretty good. There were some scenes where I really felt like I was there. And then there were scenes that I couldn't picture at all. All of that aside though, I cannot wait for the next book!

This one has elements of The Maze Runner, Birthmarked, and The Hunger Games, all of which I loved. But the perspective is what was most interesting to me. It's from a male perspective, and it's crazy believable. His voice is clear, and the triangle is actually two girls and a guy, but that's not the focus. The focus is that literally nothing in Gray's world is what he thought it was, and now he's dealing with the truth. My teens will love this.

It's really interesting. It reminds me of The village (the movie) and The Maze Runner.

It's kinda refreshing read a male protagonist, but sometimes he was just too weird.

Just okay. There were too many times while reading the book that I thought "well that was convenient". And way too many times I felt certain plot points or details or character traits reminded me of other YA books - "this is just like ______" (fill in blanks with Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent, etc.) - which made the entire story feel unoriginal.

Also, Gray was just not all that likable and too much of a hypocrite in judging others for their actions while his were the same or similar (Damn you, Emma! Never mind I'm lusting over Bree!).

Parts of this reminded me a little of Hunger Games. A hero who's good with a bow and arrow and needs to train? A community that people think is destroyed, but may turn out to be . . . not destroyed?

A lot of things happened in the book, but it was hard for me to feel invested in any of the characters or in the storyline. It was a little too much.

this ends up being very different from what the synopsis would suggest, but still quite good.
