This book was a cross between Maze Runner & Divergent. It was definitely a page turner, but it didn't necessarily effect me in any way. Maybe because I feel like I've read it before. And, of course, it's a trilogy, so there are 2 more to go. I'm not sure if I'll read the next 2.

Story was a quick read, but predictable, cheesy, and definitely a product of its time. More like 2.75. Fast paced, meh characters, odd love triangle. Won’t continue with the series probably.

After reading such mixed/negative reviews for this book, I didn't expect to like Taken as much as I did. It’s not a perfect book - there are some plot holes and inconsistencies, and the pacing seemed a bit off - but I found it an enjoyable, if somewhat predictable, dystopian debut.

I didn't find Gray all that likeable at first, and I thought that was going to break the book for me right in the first few chapters. He’s rash, reckless, selfish and impulsive
Spoiler(and he beats up a girl in the first chapter)
, but he’s not downright horrible. He grew on me throughout the book. Is he “swoon-worthy”? No way. But I didn't mind him as a narrator.

Despite its imperfections I enjoyed Taken, so I don’t really want to nitpick at it too much. I’ll definitely pick up the sequel, and maybe even the novella at some point.

4.5. Good story. Really good story. I'm sure this is the first in a series, and I'll be the first in line to grab the next one. Erin Bowman has set up a love triangle, a move to a new setting, and the possibility of adding new characters to an already strong list. There are so many dystopian novels out there now that it boggles me how many new plot ideas and scenarios authors can come up with. I really liked this one a lot.

I'm not overly fond of any of the characters except Blaine... maybe.
And that should be 3.5 STARS.
I would definitely read the sequel when it's out.
The storyline was interesting in the beginning, and the back story that developed later on really kept me hooked.

This book was very okay. Not good, not bad, just very okay. The premise was interesting, at least at the start, and some of the characters were worth investing in. I have two big problems with this book, though.
The first is that I kept reading, especially the first half, due to curiosity about many plot elements and what information the main character would learn next. Unfortunately, almost every revelation was either predictable or just not very exciting. I either knew already what was going to be revealed, or just kind of shrugged and said "yeah, that's interesting I guess." I'm a sucker though, so I pressed on hoping that the next reveal would be a good one. The book even ends with a big mystery to be revealed in the sequel, but I haven't decided if I want to continue with this series or not.
My second problem is that one of the characters ONLY exists to participate in a love triangle. That is her entire purpose in the story. And if there's one thing I hate more than love triangles, it's characters that don't serve a purpose beyond their love triangle. It's especially irritating since the time spent with her could be time spent letting the reader know more about Claysoot and feel attached to the town and the people, so they feel the main character's devotion to his town. Instead we waste time on a girl with little personality and zero purpose. As a result of this, I don't care about Claysoot or the people who live there. As a result of THAT, I don't care about that the main character cares about Claysoot or the people who live there. This all ends up making me not care about the main character's motivations, and when you don't care about the quest you're not going to care about the story.

Overall, this book wasn't the worst but it certainly wasn't the best. I'm debating picking up the second one, but for now I need a break.
