This book is a refuge to me when I begin to lose inspiration. When things start feeling down and I start questioning fundamental things about myself, I read Rilke.
Rilke is one of the most well-known poets of the German language, but I like to think that his influence extends further than that. His work draws heavily from Greek mythology, a long love of mine. He’s written over 300 poems in the lovely French and they’re some of my favourite penned works.
Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet is the perfect confidante. Since we, the readers, don’t see the letters written to Rilke, only the letters written by him, we can fill in the blanks about the questions we ourselves would ask him.
The letters are between himself and a fellow aspiring poet who shares the same scholarly roots as Rilke and reminds him of himself. Rilke advises him to only write and think of writing if you feel a driving force and desire. I’ve always read Rilke and found him rejuvenating. It’s very easy to see his love for the written word, for the poem, in his work and it is infectious.
I know that poetry month is over but I’ve been unable to pull myself out of poetry and works relating to it.

J’ai pas aimé la lecture, mais c’est un classique sur l’écriture donc bon… je m’attendais pas à ce que j’aime quoi
