Somehow, this was both boring and beautiful.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the day-to-day life of Francie as she grows up in Brooklyn, alongside her family as they struggle with poverty. At times, it feels tedious, but Smith's writing is undeniably beautiful, and by the end, I found myself truly rooting for Francie.
Although written in 1943 and set in the early 20th century, many of the conflicts explored in the novel remain relevant today. These include the treatment of immigrants and the desire to rise above the circumstances you're born into.
While the pacing is undeniably slow, Smith’s writing is both realistic and poetic. Francie’s moments of humor are perfectly timed, and her moments of pain genuinely resonated with me.
