This is not a perfect book and I have some minor complaints, but they are overshadowed by my enjoyment of this story and the characters. The main character is at times annoying but overall entertaining enough, though it’s really my emotional investment (obsession) in the “other guy” and their relationship that made this book for me. I also found the plot to be very gripping and the level of science detail agreeable and interesting. As someone who does not read science fiction very often, I really loved exploring the possibilities and questions about alien life and evolution. This book has me excited to read more in the genre and from the author. Lastly, this book did make me cry and for that I always give five stars.

Amaze! Happy happy happy.

A sci fi novel that somehow is as sloggy to read as a science textbook, with extra millennial cringe narration

DID NOT FINISH: 16%

Found the scientific info boring and the protagonist annoying (the constant minced oaths...like we get it, he is a teacher).

It only took this long to finish it because I got my wisdom teeth out halfway through*

I liked it! I was thinking it would take longer to get into, but I was hooked off the bat.

5 stars because I would read it again and I have already recommended it to a friend.

Rocky is such a good character. I think Ryland is also really good. The building of their relationship was art. Just the mutual curiosity and realism to them both was something I really appreciated.

For a second I didn’t think we’d find out if earth got saved or not at the end. But I liked it all. The back and forth of past and present. The ending. The middle was a little like “okay something else is going to go wrong”, but overall, really good.

I worry the movie will not do a justice, but we shall silently wait with high expectations

This book was something I surprisingly loved. I loved the different take on how aliens would work and how communication developed between them. The ending was bittersweet but so well written. I enjoyed how physics involved this book was. IB physics for the win.
