Sprawling, in many ways epic, and disappointingly dull. At times, more an (extensive) account of modern history's greatest events than a work of truly gripping, character-driven fiction. Great, thought-provoking moral questions studded throughout, hidden in long, overweight paragraphs laden with details far in excess of what was needed to get a point across. Believable characters with genuine flaws and relationships, too often lost within the novel's bulk. A story I was eager to read, but glad to finish.

While this is my introduction to Ian's work other than a synopsis of nutshell his writing and master over creating his reality is remarkable with a grand scale of world building. The narrative eye is wonderfully gauged with hindsight. Overall a brilliant engaging read , that just puts life to center stage.

Long, pensive, melancholy. Deliberately dissatisfying. The interplay between global events and individual decisions was nicely done. I do feel I lived a life between these covers.

Meerdere keren het boek opgepakt maar ik kwam ik gewoon totaal niet in het verhaal, tot op het punt van afdwalen. Twee sterren omdat de schrijfstijl wel heel lekker las en ik hierdoor nog wel eens een ander boek van deze schrijver wil gaan lezen.
