This was a fun and sweet and simple comic. Very fitting as one of several books I am reading this month in honor of Halloween. I will say I already want to give the creature a big hug.

This is my first time reading manga and I might be obsessed.

It is a dark fantasy tale that begins with a young girl, Shiva, who was somehow abandoned in her town by her auntie. She meets an “outsider” or monster that she calls Teacher, who helps her throughout the story. But the catch is that they must never touch because of a curse.

The manga is both cozy and a bit creepy, and I love it. My only regret is not buying the whole series so I could binge read the entire thing this weekend.

4.5/5 stars.

I’m interested to know more about what happens with this girl and this monster but it was simply okay. Lots of potential with the storyline but the writing is just so simple that it feels like there something missing in this story.

🖤 this review was made after reading all 11 volumes. 🖤

a beautiful, haunting, slooo0ow (then fast), dark, gothic fairy tale about the most adorable n sassy lil girl ever and her evil-looking, amnesiac deer friend who spreads The Curse on touch. hilarity* ensues.

*’hilarity’ meaning a heart-wrenching, intimate, philosophical story about two souls navigating and uplifting each other on an incredibly bleak journey, learning how to integrate the hurt into the love.

honestly, i’m not sure if i like the ending, but the last panel made me weep into my hands for like 10 minutes. it nonetheless felt meaningful and abstract, which follows the Vibe. speaking of which, the atmosphere and art style are the crown jewels of this story imo. truly masterful paneling and art direction; the black n white color palette is a layer of the storytelling, rather than just playing the role of ‘manga coloring technique.’

also, shiva is a peach of a character and i truly adore her.

i will be thinking about this ethereal lil fantasy for a while. if you’re looking for a bittersweet series rooted in humanity, loss, empathy, and connection with a brothers grimm-esque atmosphere - give totsukuni no shoujo a try. so enchanting. 🐦‍⬛
