Another fun installment in the Smythe-Smith series. I liked both of the mains a lot, and I liked them together. Unfolding Anne’s story was sad, but interesting. While reading, it didn’t cross my mind, but when I finished I realized Daniel was perfect. In retrospect, I’m not sure how I feel about that, but it’s kinda nice to read a guy who loves his family and his love interest and is just an all around good guy.
I really enjoyed the peeks we got of Hugh in this story, so I’m super pumped to read his next. We want to see him go from cold and unfeeling to a big ol’ softie!
As much as I liked this story, something is stopping me from giving it five stars. I’m not entirely sure why!

He’s, ugh, a lil fucking rapey. He meets her, didn’t ask for her name, neither one of them have said anything and he kisses her, excuse me? Where’s the consent? Where’s the hello my name is. then he spends the next hundred pages trying to fuck her while she’s like ‘yeah no Ill loose my job if you try and fuck me’ and he’s like ‘na actually I don’t care’. This book just tried to jam in so many story lines it’s crazy, like they both have some dark backstories with people wanting to kill them and it’s too much drama (how am I saying that?). it’s just really dark, she nearly gets like r-worded like 4 times and nearly murdered. The last book was so cutsie and I thought this was gonna be such a chill series because of it, in reality this book is just a stark contracts to the previous ‘friends to lovers who really like sweet treats’ book, how is this the same series? Their love also felt one note to me, it was never really developed beyond love at first sight. I say all this but I guess I was entertained, I mean it doesn’t lack a dramatic story which is good I guess but I mean, I struggled.

This wasn't my favorite Julia Quinn novel but as always it was enjoyable enough. The banter between the main characters was charming if their love/infatuation wasn't exactly the most believable. I do love the Smythe-Smith family as a whole though so while this wasn't mind-blowingly new or exciting, it was a generally good time and a solid entry into the regency world that JQ has created.

I just didn't love the plot or the characters, it felt like too much backstory and mostly insta-love in the present.
