The adventures the author went on seemed rather amazing and you could see the passion he had for each trip in his writing. The book was overall well written, though maybe a little too wordy at times. With the author aiming for ~40 pages for each chapter, it felt like he could have wrapped things up quicker in some scenarios.

Overall, it was a good travel book that I think suffered from too much structure at times.

Brilliant world tour of the local apocalypses that could blossom into our whole planet in the right circumstances. Expertly paced and balancing trip report with hard science, its heavy, gripping and more than a little humbling. It mostly builds from one chapter to the next, minus one chapter I found lacking in cataclysmic perspective, but the structure, execution and style are top-notch. Read it. Learn whether or not to maintain hope, ground as we are in the gears of a planetary ecosystem. Ill leave that up to you.

Childs is by far one of my favorite contemporary authors. He manages to intermix story with science in a tangible, fascinating way. This book was a vivid insight into the workings of the many forces - human and geologic - that have shaped and are shaping our world. It also turned out to be a fascinating tour of some of the remotest places of our planet, places I will probably never have the physical prowess to access. I felt like a privileged insider, and have even more gratitude than before to be a privileged inhabitant of this powerful, unpredictable, beautiful earth.
