Man, this one is hard for me to rate. It's another I loved with my whole heart as a boy and young man.
It's big and messy. Not horror, but some kind of horror-fantasy hybrid fused onto an adventure chassis. It also only succeeds in half of what it wants to do. The world feels half-baked, almost like a child would imagine or dream it (which may be part of the point). Everything is archetypal.
Parts of it are wonderful. It has thrilling set pieces. It has a classic adventure story arc. It has big, tropey, villains. It also has stereotypes aplenty, clunky exposition, and maybe a bit of internal inconsistency.
