DNF @ 32%.
For Whom the Belle Tolls is a cozy wish fulfillment romantasy that is also trying to provide therapy. It’s also boring and not well written.
The main character is so obviously the author that it’s…. It’s just not cute. There’s no meaningful stakes. It is repetitive, often clunky, and has chapters so short you can tell it used to be a tiktok skit series. There’s no masterful writing to be found here. And that’s not always a requirement for me— but in this case the “cozy” nature combined with that just makes it a slog to get through. Entirely too long. I want to be able to give books a good rating even if I don’t like it- I accept some books just aren’t for me! And in that case, I can lean on the fact that it is well written or x/y/x was great. I don’t think I can for this one. I think a significant paring down and exploring the more interesting ideas in this world, rather than focusing on puns and having each individual scene be it’s own therapy lesson (let it BUILD!), would have done the novel a lot of good.
Honestly, I’m sure this was picked up as a novel due to the popularity of the tiktok skit series it was based on. It was probably also rushed to print or was kept from editing it needed because the primary audience is the people who watched that series. Just because an idea will make money and has broad appeal, doesn’t mean it will translate well into this format.
Also I got through 200 pages and then skimmed to the sex scenes to see how they were (200 pages to reach 32%!!!!!) and honestly. Fine. Nothing to write home about. The first “sex” scene (aka fourth base) is on page 397. Which is absolutely bonkers bananas.

A beautiful that will have you laughing one minute, crying the next.
Even if you've not seen the TikTok series this is based on it's still a beautiful story about family, love and acceptance.

I'm surprised at how many 5 star reviews there are. I found the book to be slow paced and anti-climactic. The main character though initially loveable, became entitled and annoying. Various s*x scenes which were graphic yet repetitive. Plot was non-existent and though having read over 600 pages I couldn't tell you what the main storyline was about. Would not recommend.
