This is very very good but also very intense. If you've only read Western stories it is a Big change of pace, the story telling of this is inherently and unapologetically Afro-Carribean. It's very gritty and gorey and sensory. Bear with it, it's worth reading

I don't pay a lot of attention to book buzz, so I didn't know this one existed until a friend gave it to me.

And oh my God, what a book! I don't say many books are raw, but this just might be the most raw and definitely not for the faint of heart OR anyone looking for a quick read. This book is DENSE, and the most wild of frame stories to ever exist, as sometimes you're pulled through another frame into a nother mini-story. It got to a point where I forgot Tracker was telling this story from a jail cell and was mad when I was reminded. The way the whole story gets revealed, with its twists and heart-breaking turns, is masterfully done in a style not familiar to Western civilization, but very true to heart if you know anything about African mythology or storytelling. I would like to read more of Marlon James's work in the future!

I love the rich imagery, imaginative storytelling, and lush world-building but the level of intensity is not where I'm at right now. Strong trigger warnings come with this one. The content warnings under "graphic" occur multiple times in each chapter.

i got this book from the library, so I had to read it fairly quickly--too bad, since something slow and heavy like this is better when you can really take your time with it, I think. not necessarily a "fun" read, but good and dark and ruthless. the worldbuilding is phenomenal. just don't expect a lighthearted fantasy where good things happen--this isn't that.

A love a pretty cover and this one is gorge. That’s the main reason I bought it. The book is really good. It’s also a black queer writer writing a black queer fantasy, which I didn’t know going in and LOVED!

It’s an epic, it’s mythology (and all the fuckery that entails), it’s fantasy, it’s a mystery novel, and it combines these genres nicely.

I see comparisons to Game of Thrones, but I didn’t read those nor watch many of the episodes. Maybe the cruelness and the casualness of abuse and violence is similar. It was a bit rough to get through but overall it’s a really good book with a complicated story and complex characters. And also YAY BLACK QUEER STORIES!

I have such mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, the pacing is very slow so it's quite hard to get through, especially the first 200 pages. Also it has very graphic depictions of violence and rape and it's very dark overall. On the other hand, the writing style is very beautiful and I grew to love the characters.
Overall I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone, and I won't be reading the next ones in the series but I did enjoy some parts of it.
