Truthfully its a three star book but it gets a full star added for Charls the renown Veretian cloth merchant. Chefs kiss. Lost my fucking mind for that whole series of events.
This one was a little more war and politics than I personally care for honestly but the last like five or so chapters were so worth it! Now if only we could get a nice epilogue/timeskip novel

Like with books 1 & 2, I loved this so much.
Everything flowed so well - the character development, the change in the setting, the main events leading to the conclusion. It really felt like no stone had been left unturned. Not once did I find myself questioning what was happening.
The ending was abrupt and honestly I turned the page and was like 'NO, I NEED AN EPILOGUE' !!! My boys! I need to know what happens next.
(I've since found out there's a collection of short stories! So I'll be reading this to console myself that I've finished the series!)
To have written a book with SO MANY double-crossing moment, betrayals, an MMC who can plan 10 steps ahead? That can't have been easy. So a huge round of applause to CS Pacat, because Laurent's mind is something else.
The character growth from book 1 through to book 3 is tremendous. The relationship between Laurent & Damen went through so many stages and the TENSION in this book was magnificent. Their relationship was really put through the ringer.
Overall, I loved this book and it was the perfect conclusion to the trilogy!
SERIES REVIEW:
This entire series captivated me in a way that I wasn't fully expecting. It was beautifully written, compelling and intricate. I knew I was going to love it but I didn't anticipate just how much.
If you like political intrigue and court politics, this is the series for you. The plotting, the betrayals, the mind-games and the huge battles! It's really spectacular to read. Despite everything going on, though, I didn't feel overwhelmed with information.
The MMCs - where do I start? I love Laurent & Damen so much. They're opposing characters with very different values but they work so well as enemies, reluctant allies, friends, lovers. Their relationship evolves so organically, never feeling forced. It's just... Beautiful? The way they complement each other, they both learn and grow. Ugh. I couldn't get enough of them.
The slow-burn romance between them is complex, it's fractious and it's delightful. Spicy scenes have a feeling of significance and importance within the story; serving as a plot-point. I wouldn't say this is a 'spicy series' but don't let that put you off, the yearning makes up for it.
The concept of pleasure slaves and the power imbalance it can cause was interesting, but it does add a darker element to the story. Please consider this before reading and check TW.
This was such an experience, I truly can't put into words how much I loved it, and I could happily read it all again and not get bored. If it's on your TBR, bump it up. You won't regret it

I laughed, I cried, I gasped, and rushed towards the ending like a mad man. This author is a genius. When I say I want a slow-burn romance, I mean THIS.
