a perfect conclusion

⭐️2.5
I absolutely loved the first two books in the series, even giving them five stars, but this installment felt like a letdown. It seemed as though the author was rushing to wrap up the story, resulting in a chaotic, messy plot that doesn't do justice to the series' potential. The addition of Laurent's POV, though a small section, felt unnecessary and only detracted from the overall flow—either fully incorporate it or leave it out altogether.

The two MCs remained consistent, but unfortunately, the storyline was chaotic and messy, which significantly impacted my enjoyment. The ending was especially disappointing—abrupt and with little explanation, leaving many important questions unanswered. I can't help but feel frustrated when a story concludes without any real resolution, and this book did just that. While the characters still had potential, the rushed and unresolved conclusion dragged down the overall experience.

Book Review:

The more I think about this book, the harder it is to find things I truly enjoyed. I expected answers and satisfying conclusions, but instead, we're left with Damen bleeding out on the floor alongside Laurent, with little resolution to the major plot points. For example, how did Laurent get captured before the battle? This was completely skipped over.

The fate of slavery was another missed opportunity—Damen was clearly against having a slave, yet the issue isn't resolved. Why did Kastor allow the Regent so much power in both his kingdom and Ios? And why did Kastor’s brother permit the Regent to take his child, especially after Jokaste's threat? Kastor, who was a key player in earlier books, barely appears here, and his minimal presence felt like a letdown.

The council's sudden shift in loyalty was far too easy, and the book implied Laurent was taken advantage of by his uncle, but then why was it okay for the prince to be used? If the council didn’t know the truth, why didn’t Laurent just tell them? The face-off between Damen and his brother was extremely anticlimactic, with barely any tension or conflict—just a brief sword fight and a quick discussion.

Finally, the book ends with Damen in peril, and while there's a short story that reveals he survives, that should have been included in this book. Overall, it felt like a rushed conclusion with more questions than answers, leaving me disappointed and frustrated.

Very satisfying ending to this wonderful trilogy. Character driven, the plot's sole purpose is to drive the characters to expose emotions and rethink their once thought unmovable resolve. Foreshadowing plays out throughout all three books and come together in the back half of the third book wonderfully. Readers ride mainly from Damen's point of view, with the occasional tease of Laurent's on-goings on the side. The beauty in this fact is, we, Damen and the reader, find ourselves flustered in trying to figure out what he could be planning or thinking. Laurent is both open and mysterious at the same time, and as the third book unfolds you will find your suspicions from the previous two books being answered with care. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this! TO CHARLS AND HIS COUSIN, CHARLS!
