This would be a great childhood book if it weren't for all the racism.

I went into this expecting it to be a book that could still be read to children — I had no idea how racist the book is. I barely remember the Disney film as I was so young when I watched it but know now that the film has its racist caricatures and issues too. I was also shocked by the extreme gender essentialism. Obviously all novels are products of their own time and will never conform to today's standards so I didn't expect it to, but even reading this in context as a Victorian/Edwardian novel, it was very off-putting.
