If I had to think of a book that impacted me as a child, and yet was SF/F, I would say Dr. Seuss‘s The Lorax (and yes, in my book this counts as fantasy as it has fantastical elements).
When I first read The Lorax at age 4, it scared me. I had nightmares about all the trees on our planet dying, and the Earth being swallowed up by pollution monsters until everyone died. With the book’s reminder, Unless, I vowed to do more to help the planet.

Sad coincidence that I got this in the mail and read it on the same day the president ordered environmental protections undone. I'll keep striving to be the person who cares and not The Once-ler.

Hits surprisingly hard as it dives into the heavy topic of destructive capitalism, wrapped up in a whimsical, childlike fantasy. I got quite emotional, especially towards the end, as the story pulls no punches about the consequences of greed and environmental neglect. That said, hard to think of a better way to address something so rampant but often swept under the rug.

A good book for children on environmental stewardship and the consequences of greed.
