Have I just read a different book to everyone else? Has Kindle accidentally downloaded a different version of this book? I really do not get all the 5* reviews?
I found this book preachy, unrealistic and cringey but mostly I found it incredibly boring.
People seem to think the language is amazing. Yes I can appreciate its well written but the lack of substance detracts from the language.
As an atheist I also found the ‘subtle’ (or not so subtle) Christian messages annoying.
Another storyline that pissed me off in the book is the 1st woman who was gifted a picture who was a successful accountant but had only ever just wanted to be a mother. Oh please! It felt like a member of Trumps team telling us that women should just be good wives and mothers.
I did not like this book!

Occasionally I will rate a book, but rarely do I write reviews. In this case, I have to.
I don't know when, or even if, I have ever been so moved by a story. Mr. Levi's words evoke so much beauty and emotion that many times I was moved to tears. I sobbed my way through the last several chapters… It was difficult to even see the words on the pages and I caught myself thinking, I'm glad I'm reading this on a Kindle, otherwise my pages would be waterlogged.
I found myself reading only one, maybe two chapters, a day. I treated this story like a special vintage wine (and I wrote this sentence way before I read the relevant text) ... taking my time, savoring every sip, dreading the moment the bottle is empty.
I have several "favorite" books but none of them are as beautifully written, nor do they tell as beautiful a story. Theo of Golden has easily worked its way into my three all-time favorite books.
Two of my favorite passages:
"There must be love for the gift itself, love for the subject being depicted for the story being told, and love for the audience. Whether the art is sculpture, farming, teaching, lawmaking, medicine, music, or raising a child, if love is not in it - at the very heart of it - it might be skillful, marketable, or popular but I doubt it is truly good. Nothing is what it's supposed to be if love is not at the core."
"There is no virtue in advertising one's sadness. But there is no wisdom in denying it either. And there is the beautiful possibility that great love can grow out of sadness if it is well-tended. Sadness can make us bitter or wise we get to choose."
If I could give this 5 million stars, I would.
