Pues bueno...

Wow I loved this! I always love the Gossip girl-ish type stories and that's exactly what this is!
I got into this SO quickly and I always love that. All the different characters and POVs were all very interesting. All the technology is super interesting as well. And the DRAMA, man! I read this in 5 days which is super fast for me. I can't wait to read more of this world and characters.

This book is a lot like watching reality TV. Its not deep or enlightening, but its so, so entertaining.

Now, I have not read or watched Gossip Girls so if there are a lot of parallels that people are frustrated with then I can't really speak to that. I can say, this book roped me in and I had to know what crazy thing was going to happen next. Let me tell you: there was a lot of bat shit crazy stuff going on...

If you're really into deep reads then this will not be for you. But if you want a light, train-wreck of a read then The Thousandth Floor is the perfect option.

I loved how creative the author was with her interpreation of the future. The story reminded me of Gossip Girl, cheap yet addicting drama. Overall an interesting and good read. However, I would not say it was incredibly thoughtful or meaningful.

Confession time: I'm partial to the occasional trashy, chick-lit novel. You know the ones I mean. Those meaningless dramas where everyone sleeps with everyone and everyone betrays everyone and you are not required to think too hard. So when people were calling this a "futuristic Gossip Girl", that honestly didn't bother me. GG is an old guilty pleasure. Also, Chuck + Blair 4ever.

That's not the problem with [b:The Thousandth Floor|24921954|The Thousandth Floor (The Thousandth Floor, #1)|Katharine McGee|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1464892870s/24921954.jpg|44574911]. This is the problem:
On the other end of the call was Atlas, her brother - and the reason she never wanted to kiss anyone else.

Ick.

I don't care that he's technically her step-brother; my issue with incest extends way beyond genetic factors. I don't mind when it appears to show abuse or is portrayed negatively, but I got the distinct impression that it's actually supposed to be sexy in this book. And I'm sorry, but I don't buy into the "consenting adults" argument for incest, or the comparisons with homosexuality. As Saletan's Slate article says:
Homosexuality is an orientation. Incest isn't. If the law bans gay sex, a lesbian can't have a sex life. But if you're hot for your sister, and the law says you can't sleep with her, you have billions of other options. Get out of your house, for God's sake. You'll find somebody to love without incinerating your family.

It was a huge issue for me in a novel that could have easily been some mindless entertainment. McGee considers many different aspects of what the year 2118 might look like, from technology to global warming to designer babies. On top of that, it's a diverse book, as well as just a very interesting and rather... dazzling idea. Imagine a future where Manhattan literally becomes a vertical city in an enormous skyscraper; the extremely wealthy partying and getting high on the top floors.

But I just don't want to read about siblings making out. I read to the end to find out who falls from the tower in the prologue, but I seriously considered not finishing it the moment Avery and Atlas lock lips. There are a lot of characters in this novel, all being young, stupid and scandalous, and I honestly quite enjoyed reading about their superficial lives, but I won't be returning for the sequel. That kind of "romance" is just not my thing.

Me pareció increíble.

Leanlo!!

Maybe more like a 3.5, but the thousandth floor was a surprisingly gripping read. After the first few chunks were past, anyway - there's a reason I started this and then didn't touch it for months.

While the setting sounds distinctly impractical, the actual day to day life of the characters made it work, the right amount of familiar and new to feel futuristic. And it worked well with the stories told, which span a delightfully wide set of social circles and really redeemed the book.

However... slow start is not great, but (and could be personal taste) I could not stand the "main" character. Frankly I sided more with the crazy chick than the literally perfect girl whose role in the story and whose problems only served to make all the othet characters seem INFINITELY more likable. Slight spoilers, but imo Avery was kind of a selt absorbed bitch. She even admits it! And does nothing but whine an justify her actiond with no regard to anyone else.

The other HUGE drag to this story was the brother who plays a big part in the plot and has the personality and presence of a throw pillow. His complete lack of appeal only further alienated me from what was clearly meant to be the main storyline, especially as the story went on and the other characters quickly and obviously became way way better stories. I'll be reading the second one, but I would be way more excited if it opened with a note explaining that certain characters had mysteriously died in between books.

Ylipäätäänsä maailmanrakennus olisi selkeyttänyt joitain asioita kirjassa, koska olisin itse ainakin halunnut tietää miten maailma on ulkopuolisesti muuttunut sadan vuoden aikana ja miten Torni toimii teknisesti.
Kirja olisi myös voinut enemmän keskittyä mielestäni luokkajakoon, koska se tuntui olevan tärkeä teema kirjassa (ainakin Rylinin kohdalla).
