Why read this? For the short version, skip the next two paragraphs. Be warned: this book has long descriptions - just like my review.
As a mix of romantism and simbolism (so it's written), combined with a fact that it's a third-person old-style narration, this book takes detail-oriented to a new level. As the action can be generally summed up in 3 to five phrases, which I won't do here, everything that sits still long enough is described: forest, ground, sun, flowers, drunk characters and sleeping characters.
So that no one misunderstands, I generally skip descriptive passages. They serve their purpose, this, I know. In their respective literary movements, they serve to highlight symbols, slow down the time of the action and generally fill up half a page with something useful only to a film director - actually, there was a film done after this book, in 1961. But they do create a lasting impression of Kaperna.
Back to the main question, then, why read this book?
It's a Cinderella story, with very very long descriptions and enough Cinderella to make all fairy feminist godmothers pull their dyed hair out. The book was written almost 100 years ago and the character is even older.
Ok, it's a sweet love story. So what?
Well, unlike the washed-out original, Prince Charming actually gains in brain cells and by the time the fifth chapter rolls around he manages to bitch-slap us with some pretty decent life philosophy. Despite the fact that he's a captain, and a rather terse one at that, the author actually manages to sell it, as well as create one of the most interesting male characters since ... *well, that's interesting*
