True Grit has been high on my TBR pile for so, so long. I love both film adaptations, and it is a book that is often hailed to be on of the greatest westerns, So, I finally got to picking it up.... and I loved it. Mattie Ross is going down as one of my favourite protagonists and characters of all time. She is a force of nature on the page that makes every single word engaging.
I am a character driven reader, and this is a book that focuses on its quirky, unique, authentic characters. The dynamic between our three central characters is simply masterful, as we see real growth in their relationships with each other, whilst not being romanticised in the least. Portis utilises his prose to fully immerse you in our setting and period, which is the late 19th century, and also makes sure to bring out the characters through so many idiosyncrasies that are shown naturally. It is this feeling of immersion from which all the other brilliant parts of the story spring from.
