This novel is way too good to have been out of print. Glad the coan brothers movie helped bring it back.

Wow. That was a good book. Do you like plucky women protagonists and crotchety cowboys with loose morals but TRUE GRIT??

Pretend the movies don’t exist and must read this delightful book.

While the plot and characterization of this book are great, my biggest complaint is with the format of the book itself. It seems the author does not believe in paragraph breaks. One chapter had 80 pages (at least on the Libby version) with no paragraph breaks. This made it very difficult to read.

I will say, the Coen brothers movie version follows the book very well!

Read for 52 Book Club Challenge 2024 #20 A revenge story.

This book kept coming up on lists of best revenge stories and I can see why. Never thought I would read, never mind recommend, a classic Western but this book was brilliant. It is written from the POV of a 14-year-old girl, who one reviewer compared to Scout Finch & Huckleberry Finn. I would agree - she is resolute, resourceful and deadpan funny as she doggedly seeks revenge for the killing of her father, in the company of hired morally dubious law men, who end up with a begrudging respect for her. One of the most surprisingly good reads of the years.

This book is pretty close to perfect. Mattie's narration sparkles and the pacing is just right.

Brilliant Western.
