Not much happens, and Mattie was not the strong, inspiring character I was lead to believe she was.

I did not know this would be so funny. I haven't seen the movie adaptations yet so I didn't know what to expect other than Mattie Ross (a no-nonsense 14 year-old girl from Arkansas) setting out to avenge her father with the help of US Marshal "Rooster" Cogburn. Imagine my surprise to find that the dialogue is hilarious, although oddly formal for a bunch of cowboys and outlaws, and the setting and events are vivid and easy to picture even though Portis doesn't use strings of adjectives to describe them (thank goodness). It's fairly short so it was a quick read even though it's not exactly fast-paced. Now I'm quite excited to see the (Coen brothers) movie and really glad that I waited to read the book first.
Disclaimer: I think it's one of those love it or hate it books. So even though this may seem like an effusive review I'm not sure that any of the ladies I know would enjoy it as much.

A humorous romp, though not as picaresque as one may desire: so go the purple passages when penned by spinster Presbyterians. I enjoyed the novel, though felt it slight at critical points.

I'm kinda surprised at how much I liked this, although maybe not so much after how Ariel of Books Unbound described it. (Boy was she right about all the mouth noises in the audiobook too...) I now need to find more Westerns with spunky girl main characters. Although preferably written with fewer racial slurs.
I really enjoyed the straightforward yet descriptive writing style. I can see myself picking up something else by Portis in the future. But maybe after a detour in reading some Westerns/historical fiction written by Native or Black authors...
Contemporary writers should also take note that this is the perfect length for a book. Lol
