I have always loved the western genre, the classic Clint Eastwood films, novels, cowboys, videogames you call it, I love it. So after a new wave of obsession with the genre this is my first foray into the classic novels. This book was great. We have gunslingers, outlaws, sheriffs and bounty's. This story is set against the cold, ( a little bit different than the Texan dessert) but you still get all the good vibes. However, the wild west wasn't a particalury good time for anyone who wasn't a white man. This had always been an obstacle in enjoying the genre for me. And this book being nearly 60 years old written about the an even older period handles these delicate matters about as well as you would suspect it too. Like a steamroller through a China shop. Multiple slurs are used (said by the white characters and the very white narroter Donna Tart). The main character is a white girl raised in 19th century Arkansas and its clear in her demenure.
I think this is just a hurdle of enjoying the genre and the way the characters behave isn't necessarily condoned by the author. However it does make me feel iffy.
I liked that the main character was a head strong girl. It's a little sad that this is an exception to the genre, and with this being my first book I'm going to want it from every western.
Donna Tart (a writer respected by many) called this book a master piece. Honestly I don't think that anyone who doesn't have huge nostalgia for this book would call it a masterpiece. Its good, but I don't know what would distinguish is as a "masterpiece".

I love this book! A girl's adventure story that is fantastic! And funny - the narrator is so whip smart and is so sure that she has everyone around her figured out and then some. Also, don't miss Donna Tartt's excellent afterword in the new edition. And unusual but true, I loved the movie too (the Coen Bros. one)!

Honestly, I thought this book was really boring.
