This has been on my TBR for so long and I should have loved it. There is a plucky young heroine acting against the limits of her time and there was a revenge plot. I liked the beginning but then I felt somewhat bored with it. I think it might have been the writing and the perspectives of the side characters. I am glad to have read it though.
Been shuffling about trying to find a book for a what seems like days now, reading 20 pages into into no fewer than 5 slow-starters before being distracted by something shinier.
And then I picked up True Grit.
And it's badass. This is the kind of book that provokes "Great Book v. Great Literature" debates, and this time I could give a damn. Is this a perfect example of genre fiction? Is this Literature that transcends its genre trappings?
It doesn't matter. This is a Badass Book, and a Badass Book could give a shit what you call it.

Audiobook. I think I might have liked it more if I had read it? Idk, it was fine
This novel was a pure delight. I loved the tone, the characters, and especially Mattie’s voice. I can see re-reading this one regularly for the enjoyment of the language and the vivid scenes.

I enjoyed the book and the humor in it. The story was interesting, if a bit slow going.

This is an EPIC novel in every sense of the word! I want to be Mattie Ross when I grow up! It was so refreshing to read a classic western and I love Portis’s writing style. The unlikely camaraderie between Mattie, Rooster and LaBoeuf was so entertaining, and I was laughing at Rooster’s “smart” remarks (well, Mattie’s endearing recollection of the events). Brb I’m gonna start taking horseback riding lessons now

"I've known some horses and a good many more pigs who I believe harbored evil intent in their hearts. I will go further and say all cats are wicked, though often useful. Who has not seen Satan in their sly faces?"
"If you want anything done right you will have to see to it yourself every time."
"MR.GOUDY: I believe you testified that you backed away from Aaron Wharton.
MR.COGBURN: That is right.
MR.GOUDY: You were backing away?
MR.COGBURN: Yes sir. He had that ax raised.
MR.GOUDY: Which direction were you going?
MR.COGBURN: I always go backwards when I am backing up."

I simply LOVED this. What a distinct voice Mattie has. What scenery. What adventure! This is one I'll read with my children.
