Western adventure without all the macho bullshit that often comes with it.
What a fun read :)

Quirky characters on a perilous Western adventure make this a delightful book.

Got much better towards the end! The writing style is quite strange, works better jn some places than others. Easy to read though as it's  quite a short book.

Joe and I are reading, so we can see the movie(s) and do some compare and contrast.

An absolute masterclass in voice. You’re in safe hands with this. It’s a novel that knows exactly what it’s doing. I craved a bit more of Mattie as an adult, though that’s not what it sets out to give you, and some of the action didn’t win me over, but those are my only picky criticisms.

I cannot say that the setting of True Grit is familiar to me, as I generally dislike Westerns and have not spent much time in the south, but this story struck a chord in me and I think it'll stick with me for a long time.

It is a great story--short and to the point--but with the fun flair of the western genre. I'm not sure I'm into westerns though.
