Haruki Murakami is nothing special. His storytelling abilities are adequate, his writing style is mostly generic. He's mediocre and predictable; the first Murakami you read will probably be your favorite, simply because there is minimal deviation from one novel to the next. Yet, the same mediocrity and predictability that holds Murakami back from literary greatness(in my opinion) are the same qualities that keep me coming back. Experiencing his stories is similar to consuming bland oatmeal. Sometimes I need the palate cleanse.
Fun short novella. Unfortunately I think I’ve now completed all of his novels though! Will have to start working through his short stories.
This book had everything I enjoy in Murakami's writing. Unexpected and complex characters arising from chance-interactions, elements that are totally unexplained and others are linked back to later on.
His characters feel very full, like you've entered their life at a moment in time. I felt a profound sadness for Eri, whose state I think he depicted particularly well.
It really felt like things were coming alive at night, and perhaps it being a short book contributed to this feeling of time closing in. This is by far the shortest thing of his I have read, and his ability to construct a world and catapult you into it so quickly, and so wholly, was what I loved most.

The beginning was really good and then towards the middle it really got me so hooked in wanting to know more about the characters, how is the story going to unfold and what not. It's not a bad book at all, I just wanted more.

A classic Murakami novel: intense imagery, complex characters, and a hint of misogyny.
Does a fantastic job of capturing the energy and electricity of the late night hours.
