A fun read for my first Pratchett and first real "comedy" book. I didn't expect a book to have me cracking up as often as this, or even laughing out loud several times as I did here. Pratchett's writing felt quick, both in wit and readability, telling a neat story chock full of puns, one-liners, and lovable morons.

Absolutely hilarious. Consistently cracked me up. Terry Pratchett is a comedic wizard. This is the first Discworld book I've given 5 stars. I'm reading them in publication order, and Guards! Guards! is the funniest of the bunch so far. Funny from start to finish.
It's also the best, most cohesive story. I can see why people recommend this book as a good starting point with Discworld, but I'm actually really glad I have been reading them in publication order. Doing so introduced me to Pratchett's evolving writing style and the quirky universe he imagined.
The characters in Guards! Guards! are amazing, and this time the shenanigans are focused in Ankh-Morpork. I mostly listened to this one on audiobook. The narrator is incredible. So many hilarious voices. Awesome pacing and comedic timing. I often listened while out driving, walking or jogging, or while running errands and grabbing groceries. I'm fairly certain I looked insane, randomly bursting out with laughter or smiling all the time. My neighbors must be concerned for my mental health.
Pratchett's Discworld books are like nothing I've ever read. They are such a wonderful palette cleanser. If you're looking for something to lighten your mood, Guards! Guards! is a fine choice. Highly, highly recommend it!

My first venture into Terry Pratchett's Discworld, and a fun adventure to kick off!
I was reminded a lot of things like Hot Fuzz as I read this. This plays a lot with the the traditional storybeats of a typical fantasy adventure. In its self awareness, it will directly call out the typical tropes and either use them or not at its own whim, so you're never quite sure what it's going to do, keeping the story fresh.
The characters were all fun without falling into being caricatures of themselves.

This was my first Pratchett novel. Witty, clever, and hilariously chaotic- plus a decent fantasy novel on top of it all. One of my favourite voices in fantasy. A GOAT contender for sure.
