Clever, philosophical, fast-paced and highly entertaining. My new favorite series. Can't wait to read the other novels!

It doesn't matter how many Pratchett books I read apparently, because I still found this one absolutely hilarious (literally laugh-out-loud funny), witty and just plain ol' fun.

Guards! Guards! is an absolute gem and easily a 5-star read for me. This is the first time I’ve read a Discworld novel, and I must say it took me three tries until I was finally locked in and hooked. Terry Pratchett’s humor, satire, and heartfelt storytelling hit all the right notes. This book kicks off the City Watch subseries in Discworld, introducing us to Sam Vimes and his ragtag crew, Carrot, Colon, and Nobby, each bringing their own quirks to the chaotic streets of Ankh-Morpork. It’s got everything: a secret society, a stolen book, and yes, a full-on dragon causing mayhem. And can I just say, I love Carrot so much! His earnestness and unshakable optimism are the perfect contrast to the madness around him.

Pratchett’s writing is razor-sharp, effortlessly blending funny moments with insightful social commentary. He pokes fun at fantasy tropes, bureaucracy, and the concept of heroism in a way that’s both hilarious and thought-provoking. The camaraderie within the Watch is also pure gold, and I loved watching them bumble their way into something resembling competence.

If you liked Monty Python, then you will love this book. It has the perfect balance of absurdity and depth, making it not just a fun read, but one that leaves you with something to think about. If you love witty, character-driven fantasy that doesn’t take itself too seriously yet somehow manages to be profound, Guards! Guards! is a must-read. Five stars, no question.

I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as previous Discworld books but I rated it higher because it’s a Vimes book

My first foray into Discworld... and it was fantastic!

Seeing the overwhelming amount of books that fall into this series (43 by most counts), knowing where to start in the world Terry Pratchett has created can seem rather overwhelming. Well thankfully there exists a tool on his website to help you randomly pick a place to start! So as one could deduce from this review, my selection was Guards! Guards!
