Straż! Straż!

Terry Pratchett

4.25 AVERAGE

I enjoyed this book - after being very disappointed by "The Color of Magic," the first Discworld book. Many people online suggest that the beginning of the Discworld series is not so good, and "Guards! Guards!" is a good place to start - I have to say that I found this book much better. Pratchett displays great wit and humor in this book which I enjoyed, and if that's what you're searching for this book is a perfect choice for you. I found the plot a touch thin and particularly lacking in deeper emotional or societal commentary, which is why I give this four stars instead of five. I admit though this is a matter of personal preference.

I've read a few Discworld books over the years and then stopped as they can be quite daunting in volume and size. I decided recently to re-enter Pratchett's satirical world and finally start the City Watch series and I'm glad I did.

Sam Vimes is an intriguing character and is surrounded by a rag-tag bunch of larger than life ne'er-do-wells. The introduction of Carrot to the troupe is an absolute delight. There's also some amusing moments with the simian librarian of Unseen University and I enjoyed the dragon- admiring Lady Sybil Vamkin.

All in all this is a promising start. I've given it 5 stars but I can imagine there is room for improvement with these characters in future books. Will definitely be reading 'Men at Arms' very soon ..

This book is like a cozy blanket of happy memories. I enjoyed the reintroduction to much loved characters, especially CMOT Dibbler (who comes to mind every time I see a street vendor, prices so low he's cutting his own throat!) This is an excellent starting point to Discworld, since earlier tomes haven't aged as well.

Is it silly? Very much so.

Recommended for people who love monty python, excessive/unnecessary footnotes, orangutan librarians, and whatever Nobby is.

Very fun, perfect for what it is
