Beneath the veneer of comedy, Pratchett has aptly depicted the tragedies of everyday life. From the inexplicably sudden nature of death felt through the loss of a loved one, to the hateful bullying done by those in power, to the painfully determined way in which majority of the human beings struggle against mammoth odds, it has all been depicted in a colourful manner in the book.
The one line which really hit me hard and changed the way I viewed the book was:
“What’ll happen when the magic goes away?”
“Most people seem to manage”.
Perhaps the magic would last. Perhaps it wouldn’t. But then, what does?
A good book, well worth a read.

3.5 stars, rounded down to 3
As I read more Terry Pratchett, I've grown a bit more accustomed with his standard storytelling style. He loves witty dialogue, he loves hijinks, but man does he NOT enjoy writing action.
A situation will build, you'll laugh at all the silly lead-in, and then it cuts right as the primary action is about to resolve. The next paragraph starts with a couple-hour (or minute, or second) time jump, where the aforementioned action has already happened. This isn't ALWAYS the case -- but it is dang often!!
The book is still a delight.

My favourite Discworld book.
I feel so bad for the low stars but I just didn’t get on with it. Everyone recommended it, so many friends love it & I just don’t see it. It’s not a bad book at all, just not for me I think. I will be trying more Discworld as this was my first.
