  •  “I believe you find life such a problem because you think there are good people and bad people. You're wrong, of course. There are, always and only, the bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides.”

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

Not in the right headspace for something with this much worldbuilding and fantastical sequences. I’ll likely return to it at a later date.

3.5/5 Stars

There’s a good chance I might come back to this after reading every discworld book and think it’s absolutely brilliant. Overall, I enjoyed most of it. The comedy is very similar to something like a Monte Python sketch which is great and for some people that will be enough. It also has a good plot that has a number of twists and turns and lovable characters.

The story has some climatic moments, but the drama didn’t quite land for me all the time. Sometimes it was just a bit too silly and I just didn’t feel as invested in what was happening. There are some great moments where classic fantasy tropes are turned on their head for a laugh and it works extremely well.

My biggest problem with the book was an issue that I’m sure a lot of people don’t have, but it hurt my enjoyment of the book, and that’s the Pratchett no chapter rule. There’s no chapters here. Why that is bad is because I swap back and forth between my kindle and audiobooks every day when I’m working and off work and normally I can end at a chapter and pick up from there, but not here. I had to constantly scrub through the book or the audiobook to figure out where I was. I also listened to a pretty terrible audiobook, so that might have to do with my lack of enjoyment as well. It just felt like I didn’t know what was happening most of the time as POV’s would constantly swap without any real indicators at the start when listening.

So I guess the big problem was I just never felt very invested in the story. I have no issue with the writing or comedy though so I think I’ll give the Death series a go next.
