Guards Guards was super great!! I hear the City Watch series is a lot of people's favorite when they go through the Discworld series, and I can definitely see why. I think the witches are definitely my favourite still, however the twists in this book had me guessing- and I usually see twists! I loved the dynamics of the characters and can't wait to see more.
Excellent read that, sadly, took me way too long to read just due to a waiting list and ending up on my queue. However, I did finish it to say the least and that's worth something. Guards! Guards! was definitely a step up from Pyramids, which so far has been the weakest of the Discworld books but not bad. This is a step in the right direction, being both very very funny, but also having some excellent moments of seriousness, sometimes of darkness.
This was an excellent entry into Discworld as well as into the City Watch which I know is a very popular series and now, I can see, with little wonder as to why. It is a stellar read and with a lot of gumption to it. The characters are fantastic and not just Sam Vimes, though of course he is fantastic. The supporting cast is just amazing ranging from the Dwarf raised Carrot, to Nobby and Colon, to a widened role of Lord Vetinari (who very much shines) and Lady Ramikin. These are all astounding characters, supremely fun to read about and to enjoy their presence.
Terry Pratchett also manages to make one of the best characters who calls themselves an officer of the law as well, with complexities and feelings and conflicts that, honestly, make him worth delving further into. It is good and layered and even ruminates on the nature of the law, of doing it by the book, hell, of why even to have a police force, which is astounding in 2021 to even ponder in a book from the late 80's and early 90's. It's the most philosophical book in the series since, maybe, Mort with some moments in Sourcery. I believe, too, that this is to be a reoccurring habit in Pratchett's books. This series stays my favorite and continues to utterly be a joy. Happy reading.

Terry Pratchett delivers another classic DiscWorld adventure. It's fun, funny, and full of his classic wit and satirical portrayals of fantasy tropes.
