Guards! Guards! was my first Discworld novel, and I really enjoyed it. It’s a clever, cosy, and often funny story that plays with classic fantasy tropes. The setting of Ankh-Morpork is absurd in the best way, and the cast is both ridiculous and endearing. While the characters are more caricatures than deeply developed, it fits the tone of the book. There’s real heart beneath the humour, and some sharp social commentary too. I’m excited to read more from the series!

As the second Pratchett I've read I'm one hundred percent convinced by his writing style. His metaphors are phenomenal, his way of cutting straight to the action and keeping you on your toes while reading superb.

This book is honestly hilarious. I love all the characters and want to read more about them! A+ would recommend!

I was quite enamored with this book when I first started reading it but found the middle to be a little bit of a slog at times. Not sure if that’s the books fault or just a bit of a reading slump on my end.
Regardless, this is a great book at times despite my reading pace slowing down during the middle chapters, and it all came together well during its final moments.
The writing is the best part by far—endlessly witty and silly with excellent word play and great humor. The characters are the next best thing, with the plot probably being the least compelling of the three for me. I wish that there was more that grabbed me besides the writing style, because the characters, while fun, weren't particularly engaging beyond that.
This was my first Pratchett novel and I will be reading more by him, likely continuing this Discworld sub-series.
