Maybe 3.5. This was my first Discworld novel and I rather enjoyed this, though perhaps less than I was expecting too. I'll definitely be reading on and trying more in the series though.

My first Discworld novel. The writing is everything you want - descriptive, relatable, and funny. I'm not a fantasy person, but Pratchett's subversions and spins on the genre only add to the hilarity. I can't wait to read more of the series for a long time coming.

My very first Terry Pratchett book and introduction to the universe of Discworld! I always wanted to read one of his books, but was torn between starting with either Mort or Guards! Guards!. I ultimately chose the latter and, well...it was a good choice!

I loved the sense of humor Pratchett brought to this book. It really reminded me of bits and jokes I'd see in Monty Python and the Holy Grail; a cult full of imbeciles who are doing their best, a night watch who don't actually act as guards but rather tell the time, and a corrupt/opportunistic city who functions well with it's crime and is very accepting of whoever would rule over them.

Our rag-tag group of heroes, the Ankh-Morpork Night Watch, was a pleasure to follow. Each member felt unique and added to the group dynamic, especially its newest member Carrot. Nobby and Colon's dynamic was very fun, and I quite enjoyed the "one in a million" scene that played out towards the end. The book structure reminded me a lot of The Hobbit where we had a third-person omniscient view that allowed insight into the different groups around Ankh-Morpork, such as the cultists, the nightwatch and the librarian. It was done super well!

My only gripes I have leaving this book are very minor. I kinda wish I'd read the paperback version of this book, and a larger book at that! I also wished that this book was broken up a bit more instead of a continuous read, as I had a hard time finding a good place to stop most of the time.

I can easily see me spending more time in Discworld! I'd love to continue the City Watch subseries, but I'm still interested in the Mort subseries as well! I'll have to see what Emm thinks of it. I took a bit longer on this than I should've, but I knew no matter what I'd have a book hangover from my last read. Think it's time I get to April's buddy read 😅.

I heard this was a good place to start reading Discworld, and they were right, no prior knowledge of the series is needed to fully enjoy it. And now I'm hooked. Hilarious from start to finish. I've since read several other Discworld books and I only have about 30 more books to go!
