Years ago, I dipped my toe in the Discworld. As any sensible person would, I decided to begin with the first novel (in publication order), "The Colour of Magic." I didn't hate it. I enjoyed bits of it. It appealed to my love of Monty Python, Tolkien, and all things British. It just didn't grab me. I wasn't compelled to delve further into the other forty books in the series. "The Colour of Magic" was light and fun but, ultimately, forgettable. Recently, I stumbled on a YouTube video purporting to introduce neophytes to the Discworld series, where I learned this "publication order" approach was utter nonsense and would produce the result I experienced. The suggested starter books were "Small Gods" and this one, "Guards! Guards!" So what did I think? First, I listened to this book's audio version, which has advantages (great voice performance) and disadvantages (Pratchett's rapid-fire prose and structural ambiguity can leave a listener feeling bombarded and sometimes lost). The greatest test of any humorous novel is the number of times you laugh out loud, and this book had me, on multiple occasions, goofily chortling as I walked my dog through my neighborhood. The story was fast-paced, hilarious, ridiculous, and absurd. I loved it. I certainly don't see myself reading ALL the novels, but "Small Gods" is next on my list; we'll see how it goes.

Do you want a silly satirical fantasy? Well then you should ABSOLUTELY read the Discworld series because Guards! Guards! was a DELIGHT.

The characters were all super fun. I loved either watching them all subvert the tropes assigned to them OR leaned into it. And even when they did lean into the trope or stereotype it’s character they were always given a chance to subvert it and grow.

I really enjoyed when the world building added to the humour of the events going on. Even if there were serious additions I still really enjoyed them. I think it was clearly thought out (at least to an extent) and I never felt like I was being given too much.

I loved the writing style. I think the humour was masterfully done, especially when it came to lightening some darker scenes. I really think my only struggle was with the audiobook narrator’s performance. He did an amazing job, but there were some moments where (entirely due to the accent, it’s a “I’m dumb with accents problem”) it was just really hard to understand him and what was happening.

I could ramble for ages on the themes of what it takes to be a hero and the selfishness of the rich and the importance of having others in your life, but I’m exhausted and none of it will make sense (if this even makes sense). Overally, it’s a great read and I highly recommend it.
